Get your full report first
The RBI directive provides for one electronic free full credit report, including the score, each calendar year from each credit information company that holds your credit history, following authentication. See the RBI’s free-report directive. Start at CIBIL’s official free report page for a CIBIL report. A paid monitoring plan and the annual free entitlement are different products; read the selection screen carefully.
Save the report date and reference number. Check whether the report was generated after the payment or closure you are querying. A report from before the event will not establish that the update is missing. Ask the lender for its current account record if the dates do not explain the difference.
Which entry is wrong?
Collect loan and card statements, payment receipts, closure letters and earlier complaint replies. Write down each disputed entry separately, with the document that supports your correction.
| Check | Compare with | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership and identity | Your actual borrowing records | Masked account reference and lender clarification |
| Payment or overdue entry | Due date and receipt | Statement, transaction reference, payment date |
| Account status | Closure or settlement terms | Closure letter, NOC and payment confirmation |
| Enquiry you do not recognise | Applications you authorised | Application dates and lender response |
If you do not recognise a lender name, ask the institution which account or application it refers to. If the account still does not look like yours, say so in the complaint and request an investigation. Find the contact through the lender’s official website before sharing identity documents.
What to put in the complaint
Use the dispute option in your official CIBIL account and contact the reporting lender about the same issue. CIBIL describes its process in the dispute-resolution guide. CIBIL also explains that a lender must initiate or approve data changes; the bureau cannot unilaterally rewrite lender-reported information. See its explanation of correction authority.
- Identify the report date, lender and masked account reference.
- Name the exact field and current entry you believe is wrong.
- State the correction requested and why the documents support it.
- Upload evidence through the official process and save the acknowledgement.
- Track the lender complaint reference separately from the bureau dispute reference.
- Read the response and check the corresponding field in a later report.
For example: “The payment dated 7 June is shown as unpaid. Receipt reference attached.” Include the amount and account reference. This gives the lender a transaction to investigate. Keep paying current dues while the historical entry is reviewed.
A closed loan still shows ₹12,400 due
In this hypothetical case, Farhan has a closure letter, a final statement showing zero outstanding and a receipt for the final payment. A later report still lists the loan as open with ₹12,400 due. He attaches the three documents, identifies the account and asks the lender to confirm its closing balance and reported status. He raises a matching dispute with CIBIL.
If the lender says ₹12,400 is a remaining charge, Farhan asks for an itemised calculation and an explanation of the closure letter. If it confirms a reporting error, he saves the reply and checks the corrected entry in a later report.
“Settled” and “closed” are not interchangeable
In CIBIL's settled-status explanation, accepting less than the complete amount payable led to a settled entry, whereas full repayment would have led to closed status. A settlement is therefore not automatically a reporting error. Check the actual agreement before requesting a correction.
To revisit an old settlement, ask the lender what amount remains payable and what status it would report after payment. Get the terms in writing, then keep the receipts and any NOC. A change from settled to closed does not mean every earlier payment entry disappears.
If the reply does not resolve it
Check the acknowledgement and the organisation’s current grievance page for the applicable response time and escalation route. Keep the complaint, evidence and replies in date order so that the next person handling it can see what remains unresolved.
If a correction is rejected, compare the reason with your documents and ask about the specific discrepancy that remains. Include that explanation when escalating. Once the entry is corrected, save the new report with the old one.
Common questions
Do I have to buy a plan to dispute an error?
Start with the official free-report and dispute routes. CIBIL says consumers need not pay to rectify discrepancies or update credit information.
Can CIBIL change lender data by itself?
CIBIL explains that changes to lender-reported information require the relevant institution to initiate or approve them. Contact the reporting lender as well as raising a bureau dispute.
Should a closed account disappear?
Not necessarily. Closed borrowing can remain part of the credit history. Verify the status and balance rather than treating its continued presence as an error.
Is every settled entry incorrect?
No. Check whether the lender accepted less than the full amount. If the entry conflicts with your actual agreement or later payment, seek a documented correction.
